Tricia Fleming had a long term dream and vision for her family home outbuilding. She wanted to convert the outbuilding into a modern energy efficient space including kitchen with pantry, dining area and living room with wood burning stove. She engaged MMA architects to prepare a stunning design which would preserve and protect the original form and character of the outbuilding and also bring her vision to life. They did just that and we were fortunate enough to win the contract to bring that design and vision into reality. This was a really rewarding project. Tricia shared our passion for sustainability and the circular economy and she wanted to use and repurpose as many old materials as possible. Indeed the project itself, taking an old building and repurposing it embraces the very essence of the circular economy so this became a real delight for us to be a part of.
The finished project is a masterclass in converting and adapting an old derelict building, so common to our vernacular heritage, into a modern comfortable space all the while maintaining and enhancing the original charm of the building. Outside still looks like the original outbuilding with corrugated metal roofing and large glazing units that were once stable doors. Inside the finished space includes polished concrete floors, original lime pointed stone, bog oak door lintels, custom made industrial lighting, bespoke tile motif, a modern eco stove and designer radiators. It’s a real feast for the senses.
