This simple home improvement project transformed the way a young family lives and interacts in their new home. Sinead and Darragh have two small children and they needed a rumpus room adjacent to their main family room. They wanted to break through to the spare bedroom and have double door access with glazing, so the children were always visible. Traditional French doors were going to create circulation issues in either room and also pose a greater risk for small fingers so pocket sliding doors were the obvious choice, but there was an issue. Regular double pocket doors require a large structural opening to achieve the pocket effect, and the house was built using a concrete upper floor. This wall was load bearing so the structural requirement to install regular pocket doors was high cost and indeed high risk.
Sinead and Darragh also wanted storage and a display area to share family memories. We decided to integrate both, a display storage unit with integrated pocket doors to the new rumpus room. This approach required a much smaller structural opening and far less structural headaches. The result is amazing and demonstrates how a small home improvement can have a huge impact.
